Accordingly, the current version for OS X (which was initially only compatible with OS X Mavericks 10.9 onwards) moves any previously installed iWork 09 apps to an iWork 09 folder on the users machine (in /Applications/iWork '09/), as a work-around to allow users continued use of the earlier suite in order to open and edit older iWork documents.

With the release of OS X Mavericks, Apple have released a much-awaited update to the iWork and the iLife suite, which will be given away for free with the purchase of every new Mac bought on or after October 1, 2013 (and updated to OS X Mavericks) and every iOS 7 device activated on or after September 1, 2013. Turn handwriting into text. Magically.

With Scribble and Apple Pencil, your handwritten words will automatically be converted to typed text. Take notes, write a book, or annotate a paper fast and easy.

Write reports easier.

With new report templates, there’s no staring at a blank page. Jump start an essay, research paper, or school report by choosing from one of the 3 new templates.

Skim through in style.

Now, on your iPhone and iPad, you can read through your document, zoom in and out, and interact with it — without accidentally changing anything.

Play videos right in your documents.

Play YouTube and Vimeo videos right in Pages, without the need to open a web browser. Simply add a link, and play your web video inside your document or book.

You don’t work in one place on just one device. The same goes for Pages. Work seamlessly across all your Apple devices. The documents you create using a Mac or iPad will look the same on an iPhone or web browser — and vice versa.

You can also work on documents stored on iCloud or Box using a PC.

Work together in the same document, from across town or across the world. You can see your team’s edits as they make them — and they can watch as you make yours, too. Just click the Collaborate button and invite people to join.

Use Apple Pencil on your iPad to sketch, illustrate, and create documents. Draw and fine-tune your idea, then press play to watch each stroke animate onto the page. Plus, with Smart Annotation, your edits stay with the marked-up text, making it easy for you and your team to incorporate changes.

Teaming up with someone who uses Microsoft Word? Pages makes it simple. You can save Pages documents as Word files. Or import and edit Word documents right in Pages.

Although OS X 10.7 Lion, 10.8 Mountain Lion, and 10.9 Mavericks have each replaced it in turn, there are good reasons you may want to (or even need to) have Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

  1. You need to be running Snow Leopard to order, download, and install Lion, Mountain Lion, and Mavericks, which are available through the Mac App Store.
  2. OS X 10.6 is the last version of OS X to support Rosetta, which allows use of software written for PowerPC Macs (AppleWorks, Quicken, Microsoft Office 2004 and earlier, other discontinued apps, legacy versions of current software, etc.)
  3. If you have a Core Solo or Core Duo Mac (most of them introduced in the first half of 2006), OS X 10.6 is the last version of OS X they can run.

Snow Leopard retailed for $29 for a single user or $49 for a 5-user family pack. We think anyone with an Intel Mac and still running OS X 10.4 Tiger or 10.5 Leopard should consider upgrading 10.6 Snow Leopard if you have at least 1.5 GB of memory (any less than that and 10.5 Leopard is your best bet) – although there are some areas where 10.5 is a better choice.

The Mac Box Set includes Mac OS X, iLife 09 or 11 (iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, and iWeb), and iWork 09 (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote). The Box Set is a great deal if you need apps from both bundles.

iLife 09 requires OS X 10.5.6 or later. iWork 09 requires OS X 10.4.11, the last version of Tiger, or 10.5.6 or later. Both are compatible with both PowerPC and Intel Macs. iLife 11 requires OS X 10.6.3 and only works with Intel Macs.

Apple no longer sells iLife on disc. iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand are now Mac App Store exclusives. Each sells for $14.99 and works with OS X 10.6.8 or later. iWeb has been discontinued.

While you can still buy the entire iLife package on disc, and Apple also sells the individual apps (for those who don’t need all three) via the Mac App Store: Pages, Numbers, and Keynote each sell for $19.99 and require OS X 10.6.6 or later – and Mavericks users can download the latest version, which requires Mavericks, for free.

Mac OS X 10.6 arrived on August 28, 2009, and it further raised the bar on hardware – every Intel Mac introduced prior to Mid-2010 with at least 1 GB of RAM can run it (although it won’t run well with just 1 GB), but no PowerPC Macs can.
